Pitter Patter of little paws

*Click the image for a larger one.

Yesterday, we drove about 2 hours to visit Gimli's breeder. She had breed a different dog than the one that had problems last year and that doggie had a litter of pups.  Out of 5 pups, there are 3 boys and 2 girls.  We'll be getting one of the girls, though we aren't sure which one yet. Gimli's breeder wants to wait a couple weeks to see how they develop before she decides the one she's going to keep.

Both girls are docile and snugglers, which is what Mike and I wanted. They are a stark contrast to the three boys who are just like Gimli was at that age - bouncy, rambunctious and nibbling on everything lol.  At one point, the 3 boys were nibbling on my laces, just like Gimli did.

The one in the image above is the quieter one of the girls.  I have a sneaky suspicion that's the one we'll get - the other girl has some spunk but not as much as the boys. Gimli's breeder hopes that spunk will appear in the show ring.  The quieter one, cuddled in my lap for nearly an hour. She curled up and I played with her head and gave her tummy scratches.  She nibbled on my ring then decided to try my finger, which was a little softer lol.

She won't be ready for her new home til the middle of June. We've decided to name her Merida after the heroine in Disney's Brave.

Stay tuned for the puppy news!

5 things going on - May

1. It's finally Spring!  Our shrubs in the front yard have little leaves making an appearance and the ones in the back are almost fully green.  It turns out the tree branch that fell last month was the dead branch.  Very big thank you to Mother Nature for taking that down for us!  The rest of the tree now has little buds starting to appear.  It's not dead yet!

2. I'm working on something special for my Mom for Mother's Day.  I think it's going to make her cry, but in a good way.

3. Mike started his new job yesterday, YAY!

4. Mike's also been going to physiotherapy and it's starting to help with his mobility.

5. This Saturday is going to be a crazy, happy, tiring day and I wouldn't have it any other way.  I don't want to give this away just yet, but I will say something on Sunday.

Waiting for puppies

Yesterday started off a little unconventional and in retrospect, I should have figured out that something disappointing was going to happen.

Yesterday morning, Gimli was very clingy and wanting to snuggle. Instead of our morning walk, we sat on the floor for a while, while I gave him belly scratches and massages and kisses. The rest of the day, he was never far away.

Then in the afternoon I received the e-mail from Gimli's breeder. Turns out we won't be getting a puppy in February. The Momma dog, Gimli's 1/2 sister, had a false pregnancy and so there are no puppies. The breeder only realized something was amiss when Momma dog's milk started to dry up. The breeder's going to breed Gimli's other 1/2 sister when she comes into season in January, but she's not sure if she'll breed this last Momma dog again.

This means waiting til June before a little four legged creature get's to join our family.

After work, I took Gimli on a walk and we ended up going through the park.  It was getting dark and there wasn't a soul around.  We had a good run back and forth, Gimli played with the leash and wiggled his butt and, as silly as it sounds, I felt better.  I felt grateful that I had Gimli and that I get to see him every day.

How many months til the Fall?

Back in October, I wrote about our dilemma on adding a second corgi to our family, you can read it here: Two Corgis or Not Two Corgis, that is the Question.

Even though Gimli's breeder had a litter at that time, it wasn't the right time and it didn't feel right.

However, the months went by and I kept having the corgi dream.  I kept seeing a second corgi ever so often and it wasn't the one with a spot on it's head.  No, the dog became a red and white and in another dream it had a tail.  Clearly a European Pemmie.

Mike and I discussed it, long and hard and we decided we'd try the corgi rescue in Ontario first.  I e-mailed the owner, but she never responded.  Not even a note to say that she had received my email, nothing.

Over this past weekend, I emailed Gimli's breeder to say we were ready for a second one.  I already knew she had a litter back in October and so we were okay to wait for a while.  She's planning a litter later in the year and if all goes well, we'll have a little corgi puff coming to live with us in the Fall!

I've been excited and silly all day over the news and the pup isn't even conceived yet!  I keep asking Gimli if he wants a brother or a sister and he just looks at me with his big brown eyes.

I know from now to the Fall, we have our work cut out for us to get Gimli into better shape - behavior wise.  I've slacked off of late and so I've allowed his bad habits to come to the fore.  I'd like him to help train the new pup on good habits, not bad ones.

For now, we wait and watch for pet store sales on crates, collars, leashes and bowls. Oh and toys, I have a soft spot for buying toys for Gimli, can you imagine what it will be like with two???
