Gimli or Poochie?

As I was looking through my pictures, I felt this one reminded me of Poochie.

If you're a Simpsons fan, you may remember the short lived life of Poochie, the character brought in to help the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon. Viewers didn't care for Poochie and he was killed off.

What do you think? Poochie resemblance?

5 things - April edition

Here we are at the end of April already...

1. I know that Spring is coming when a bird tries to build a nest on our porch, on top of the lights. Now, the top of the lights is pointed and it's unsuitable for a nest of any kind. But, the poor dear still tries, as evidenced by the strips of debris that falls to the ground.

In past years, I'd be mildly upset, but because of the nasty Winter and the late Spring, the bird has no place else to go. None of the trees have sprouted buds yet. I don't know what I can do to help her? *sad face*

2. On the subject of sad faces... We are going away on vacation soon and I've started being mopey. I'm sure this is why Merida is more clingy of late.  *sigh* I cannot help it though, I do miss these dogs and their smiling faces when we are away. It's my one weakness.

3. I was in PetSmart this evening and ran into a gentleman who had a Corgi! Now, this never happens. Somehow I managed to strike up a conversation with him. This is his third corgi and she's now retired from the show ring. I showed him Gimli and Merida and he was quite surprised that we lived in the same city as Pemmies are not as popular as other breeds - Pugs, Doodles etc.

He did try to get us roped into a pyramid scheme though... hrmph, bad form.

This is what Gimli thinks of pyramid schemes.

All in all, it was nice to see another corgi.

4. We have slowly started training for our mini-marathons. We have a way to go still, but we found a place close by that's only being used by people walking their dogs, running/walking or biking. It's not yet overrun with everyone and their grandmother, so we're going to go there a couple times a week.

5. Juicing is going well. Five times a week, we have a juice for breakfast and then a smaller glass with dinner. Still no major changes - ie my skin is the same, hair is the same etc. I did lose a pound though, so there's that. I do feel that my brain is more awake and I have more energy than usual. It's a different energy - ie I'm not keen to jump out of bed each morning and do 50 jumping jacks, but my brain is awake and not as foggy as it used to be. I am not yearning for that cup of coffee to wake up and that's a good thing.

Flat Corgi Friday - Watch out for Cruella!

Dogs with such beautiful coats must keep an eye out for Cruella! Can you imagine if she saw a fluffy corgi? She'd want a hat... or a scarf!

Easter sleepies and rabbit poop

This is what you get when the corgis get a nice walk, a ride in the car to the car wash, and a couple hours in the front yard.

In other news, my Easter cake did not go over too well.  I thought I was being cute by baking in raisins to the cake and putting up the sign to find the rabbit poop, but alas.  The family that discusses sex at the dinner table and other such things was put off.

Oh well, at least the cake tasted good.

Hope you're having a lovely Easter weekend!

ps, I've only just realized the cake kinda looks like a skull.

Snow

We awoke this morning to a fresh blanket of snow across the yard.

It's the middle of April.

Here's what Gimli has to say...

Happy Birthday Merida!

Today is Merida's birthday. She's officially a year old and isn't technically a puppy anymore. *sniff*

What a time it has been with this little girl.

She's taught Gimli a great deal and made him a better dog. He's calmer around other dogs - he doesn't believe that the dog is coming to eat him, and he lets her do whatever she wants to him. In return, he has taught her to bark, the exact moment to appear when there's food around, and how to make goo-goo eyes to get what she wants... *ahem* up onto the bed...

She's taught us to try to be more patient in all things and to cherish Gimli. As weird as that sounds, she's slowly learning that Gimli gets to have one on one time too. Often I'll see her sitting by herself - watching us, while Gimli and I cuddle.

She's not as bonded with Mike or myself in the same way as Gimli. I have to keep reminding myself that this is normal and Gimli's been with us for nearly 6 years. That will come in time. When Merida is tired though, she seeks one of us out and hangs out at our feet. She'll get there, I'm sure.

Here are some pictures from the early days:

Cookie guard

Our bag of Charlee Bear cookies had finished leaving a handful of small, broken pieces.

Mike distributed the cookie pieces into each bowl as part of their dinner.

A while later, I realize I cannot find Gimli. I'm calling around the house, he doesn't come running, no whining. Merida finds me, but not him.

I finally find him here, right next to their food bowls.

Flat Corgi Friday - Ducky Momo!

Mike and I are fans of Phineas & Ferb. Naturally, my favorite characters are Candace, (spelled with an A instead of an I), and Heinz Doofenshmirz.

At Hollywood Studios, there's a small Phineas & Ferb meet and play area and sitting off to the side is the one and only, Ducky Momo! You can read all about Ducky Momo here: http://phineasandferb.wikia.com/wiki/Ducky_Momo.

Jogging Corgis

A couple weekends ago, the corgis and I went to our 3rd Dog Jog in support of the local University's small animal clinic. The money raised goes to research intended to improve the care/testing/diagnosis etc of small animals, such as dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, gerbils etc.

The goal this year was $10,000 and the event was able to raise about $9,400.

The day started a little wet from the rain the night before and so the ground was a snowy, wet, mucky mess. I dressed the corgis in their Thing 1 and Thing 2 shirts and it was a good thing I did. By the time the walk was over, their bellies and chests were nice and brown... ick!

The t-shirts were a hit though and everyone loved them. Once again, we were the only corgis in attendance.

There were 2 tracks - a 2k and a 5k. I would have loved to have done the 5k, as I'm sure Gimli can handle the distance, but I was unsure about Ms. Merida. She loves to go and go and she's a born sprinter, but I don't think she understands the need to pace. We were about half way through the 2k and I guess she realized that we still had a way to go and all of a sudden, "Ms. I must be in front and ready to run", slowed down and started to conserve her energy.

Both corgis were great with meeting other dogs. You can definitely see the difference in Gimli now that he lives with Merida. He's not as high strung and a bit more sociable. I do think he will be a Mr. Grumpypants for life and will allow some meeting, but I don't think he'll ever fully let his guard down around other dogs. Around Merida, yes. Others, not so much. At this point, I'm ok with this. If he can meet other dogs and be calm and nice with them, then great!

Merida was great too, except when this offleash dog wouldn't let up on sniffing her... girly bits. She let the dog sniff at first, but then he wouldn't stop. I could see her start to get annoyed, she was curling her lip a little, which she never does. I started to move her away, but the dog kept following! Of course, the owner wasn't paying attention.... of course.... Finally, the dog lost interest and went away. We moved out of range before the dog saw us again.

One thing I did this time was to stay on the edge of the group of dogs. Gimli does not like to be crowded and many of the dogs there were very hyper, despite going on a 2-5 k walk. I try to stay calm and to keep the corgis calm as that helps to reduce their need to act out and if another dog does come up to us, the corgis are in a better frame of mind. Most times it helps, other times I cannot help when someone comes running up to us squealing and that sets the corgis off into a frenzy. More work here is needed on our part.

We don't want to walk, we want to pee up and down this huge branch!

This cutie kept looking at us, but he was a bit too strong willed for the corgis.

the end.

Dentures?

There's a new fixture on my night stand and it comes in its own "little old lady" carrying case.

Yes, my friends, I now have a mouth guard.

Luckily for me, it's not quite dentures, but it's close enough. I have to wear it each night while I'm sleeping so I don't grind my teeth down to stumps and then really need dentures.

Mike says that it's oh so sexy... oh wait... it's April 1st, I guess he really doesn't mean that.. hrmph.
